Test Results

The following dyno testing was performed with a Cat 3116 equipped school bus using EPA driving schedules. Test commissioned by DP Morgan Co, LLC, Indianapolis, IN and supervised by Advanced Engineering Services, Bloomington, IN. Results were achieved with a very short run in period. For Earth recommends longer periods before testing.

Exhaust Opacity is measured by the obstruction of visible light expressed as the percentage to which light is obstructed.

What was Measured?

  • Gases: Measured at the tailpipe with a EMS model 8000 5-gas analyzer.
  • Hydrocarbons (HC) number is not a true measurement of percentage or ppm, it is only a indicator of increase or decrease*
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO) as %
  • Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) in ppm
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) as %
  • Oxygen (O2) as %
  • Exhaust Opacity: Measured with a Applus Autologic Opacity meter, SAE J1667.
  • Opacity means the property of a substance whereby it partially or wholly obstructs the transmission of visible light expressed as the percentage to which light is obstructed.
  • Hydrocarbons are the unburned fuel that escapes the combustion process.
  • Carbon Monoxide is formed when there is a lack of oxygen during the combustion process. This is an indicator of combustion efficiency; a more efficient burn means less CO.
  • Oxides of Nitrogen includes Nitric Oxide (NO) and Nitrous Oxide (NO2) and are formed when combustion cylinder temps become high due to engine load. Engine deposits can contribute to high NOx levels.
  • Carbon Dioxide is natural product of combustion, and is an important indicator of an efficient fuel burn.
  • Oxygen In nature the percentage of Oxygen in the air is about 20%. A high level of O2 can indicate a lean condition and a poor burn.
